NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – Commissioner Jonathan Barfield, Jr. was elected chairman of the New Hanover County Social Services Board Tuesday morning. Barfield took over the gavel from Evelyn Bryant, an appointee of the N.C. Social Services Commission, who has served since July 2008 and chair since 2011.
Barfield has represented the Board of Commissioners on the Social Services Board since filling an unexpired term in July 2011. He is serving his first three-year term on the board.
A resident of New Hanover County since age one and proud graduate of New Hanover High School, Barfield was first elected County Commissioner in 2008. He is the owner of Barfield & Associates Realty, LLC and has been a licensed Realtor since 1997.
Frankie Roberts, a native of Wilmington, was elected vice-chairman of the board. Roberts is the founder and executive director of LINC, a nonprofit organization that provides residential services for adult men and women returning from incarceration.
Roberts is no stranger to the social services board. He served a three-year term from 2004-2007; holding the ranks of chair in 2006.
The board meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. in the multi-purpose room at the Department of Social Services, 1650 Greenfield Street, Wilmington, NC 28403.
