NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC — Members of the New Hanover County Fire/Rescue, along with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), will celebrate firefighters’ 60-year partnership, and will kick off their annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign to benefit children and adults affected by muscle disease throughout New Hanover County. Firefighters will be found at various intersections with boots in hand on November 20, 21, 22, 26, 28, and 29.
“Throughout the remaining months of 2014, the MDA and firefighters nationally are celebrating 60 years of a proud partnership, joining together in the fight against life-threatening muscle disease.” said Executive Director, Christine Bender. “Firefighters in the New Hanover County area will do more for the MDA and the families we serve than any other group, dedicating countless hours of their time by participating in the Fill the Boot drive and at the MDA Summer Camp. We’re grateful for the support of these inspiring, selfless individuals who have made a profound impact on our families’ health, well-being and quality of life, and we’re excited to make this year’s New Hanover County Fire/Rescue Fill the Boot campaign the most successful ever.” In 2012 and 2013 this department was named #1 in the state of North Carolina for raising the most funds in support of the MDA.
Funds raised through the 2014 New Hanover County Fire/Rescue department Fill the Boot efforts will help support the MDA’s programs of worldwide research, specialized health care services, and day-to-day support – which includes sending children affected by muscular dystrophy and related diseases to a week long, barrier-free MDA summer camp at Camp Hanes in King, NC.
As the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s largest national sponsor, firefighters help to fuel the MDA’s mission to find treatments and cures for life-threatening muscle diseases.
Firefighter support for the MDA began in 1954 when the organization committed by proclamation to support the MDA until a cure was found, and the organization’s unwavering commitment to MDA has remained strong to this day. Nationally $100,000 was raised for MDA in 1955, and $1 million in 1970, and firefighters continue the tradition of raising the bar in their fundraising efforts. In 2013, more than 100,000 firefighters participated in Fill the Boot events across the country and raised $26.2 million. To date over $530 million has been raised for the MDA.
