New Hanover residents near Brunswick Nuclear Plant to receive KI tablets

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County public health officials will provide free potassium iodide, or KI, tablets to New Hanover County residents who live within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) of the Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant this week.

The new KI tablets will be distributed beginning Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Carolina Beach Town Hall, located at 1121 N. Lake Park Blvd. in Carolina Beach, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Residents are reminded that following this special distribution event, the health department will continue to make KI available at no charge to EPZ residents at the health department during normal business hours.

KI is an over-the-counter medication that can protect the thyroid gland if a person is exposed to radioactive iodine released during an emergency at a nuclear power plant.  If taken within the appropriate time and at the proper dose, KI blocks the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine and reduces the risk of thyroid cancer.

KI should be kept in a safe, accessible location and should only be taken when instructed by emergency officials in the event of a nuclear power plant emergency. The protective effects of KI only last for several hours.

Residents who have questions about the KI tablets can also talk to their family physicians and pediatricians about whether or not there are specific reasons why KI should not be taken.

The most recent distribution of KI to EPZ residents occurred in 2010.  Expired KI tablets can be disposed of by crushing and discarding with household garbage.
