NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – Teenagers with creativity and fashion sense are challenged to design an outfit using discarded library books for New Hanover County Public Library’s Fashion Design Contest. Young people ages 13 to 18 are eligible to enter, individually or in teams of two.  Prizes will be awarded to the top three designs, and the first place winner will receive two tickets to NCSU’s College of Design Art 2 Wear show.

In order to participate in the contest and be eligible to win a prize, entrants must attend all of the following four meetings:

  • 6:00 pm on Feb 3 at Myrtle Grove Library: to sign up for the contest, pick up the design packet, and review the contest rules and guidelines
  • 6:00 pm on Feb 10 at Myrtle Grove Library: to submit runway bio and runway song
  • 6:00 pm on Feb 17 at Northeast Regional Library: dress rehearsal—practice walking down the runway and striking a pose
  • 6:00 pm on Feb 24 at Northeast Regional Library: fashion show—model your design for a live audience and celebrity judges. If working in a team, only one member may model.

Outfits will be judged on:

  • Use of library book. How well is the book or books integrated into the outfit?
  • How original, unique, and fashionable is the outfit?
  • Can the outfit be worn without falling apart? Is it comfortable?
  • How well is the outfit put together?
  • How well is the outfit presented on the runway?

One of New Hanover County Library’s main roles is to support education and help students prepare for careers.  Event organizer Scooter Hayes is hopeful some budding fashion designers may be inspired to pursue their design dreams and apply to NCSU’s College of Design program through participating in the contest.  Hayes says, “This year’s theme for the NCSU College of Design Art2Wear show is ‘Tell Me a Story’ so it’s fitting that participants will be repurposing discarded library books into fashionable garments.  Teens are storytelling through fashion.”
