NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – On Saturday, May 16th New Hanover County Parks & Gardens will celebrate National Kids to Parks Day with the Grand Opening of the new Kids in Parks TRACK Trail at Smith Creek Park. The ceremony will take place at 10am and is open to the public. Following the ceremony, from 10:30am-1pm, guests can experience the great outdoors with free activities including TRACK Trail tours, adventure-themed exercise classes and geocaching tours.

The Kids in Parks TRACK Trail is a self-guided tour that leads kids and families on the 1.3 mile paved multipurpose trail around the lake at Smith Creek Park. It is designed to turn an ordinary walk in the park into an educational adventure by offering four brochure-led tours: Nature’s Hide & Seek, Nature’s Relationships, Animal Athletes and Hikin’ to Find Lichen. The trail is part of a nationwide network of over 80 TRACK Trails in seven states and Washington, DC which inspires kids and families to be more active outdoors. Kids can register their participation on the Kids in Parks website, www.kidsinparks.com, to earn prizes for each trail completed.

The Smith Creek Park TRACK Trail was made possible through a grant from Kids in Parks and the North Carolina Recreation & Park Association (NCRPA). The TRACK Trail will be maintained and promoted through a partnership between New Hanover County Parks & Gardens, Health Department and the Southeastern NC Regional Health Collaborative (SENCRHC).

New Hanover County Parks & Gardens strives to maintain and operate parks and facilities that will enrich the lives of the community and promote an overall healthier lifestyle.  The department manages parks, sporting areas, public spaces and county owned properties totaling over 2500 acres, specifically designed for utilization by all age groups and user types.
