NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – First and second graders who love to read and need a bike are invited to enter New Hanover County Public Library’s “Read to Ride” contest. Entry forms are available at all NHC Library locations, and must be completed and returned to the Library by 8:00 pm on August 3.
Along with the child’s grade and a parent’s permission to enter and contact information, the entry form asks how many books the child has read this summer or how many hours he or she has spent on summer reading. Reasonable estimates are acceptable. There is space for the child to draw a picture or write something about a favorite book, and a very important question, “Why do you want to win a bicycle?”
Five winners will be selected by Library staff on Wednesday, August 5 and notified to pick up a new bicycle and helmet! It is not necessary to be present to win in the first drawing.
A second chance to enter the contest is at the Superhero Fun Run on Saturday, August 8, at Myrtle Grove Library. To be considered first and second graders must enter at the event, which begins at 9:15 am. Two winners will be drawn at the end of the event, around 11:15 am, and they must be present to collect their prizes.
Seven new bicycles and helmets were donated for this “Read to Ride” contest by the Knights of Pythias Cumberland Lodge #5. Their generous contribution to reading and healthy exercise for kids helps the Library work toward its goals of improving community literacy and reducing health risks in New Hanover County.
The Order of Knights of Pythias is an international fraternity which was founded in Washington, DC, on February 19, 1864. According to their website, http://www.nckop.com/, the distinguishing principles of the Order of Knights of Pythias are “Friendship, Charity, and Benevolence”.
