NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – Steven Still has been chosen to serve as New Hanover County’s next Emergency Management/911 Director when the current director retires at the end of 2016. Still currently serves as the deputy director for Emergency Management/911, a role he has held since 2012.

Emergency Management/911 Director Warren Lee will retire at the end of 2016 after 13 years of service. Still will assume the role of director on January 1, 2017.

“Over the next four months, Warren and Steven will work side by side in all preparedness and planning efforts, as well as the new system overhaul for 911 technology and the 911 redundancy plan just approved by the state,” said County Manager Chris Coudriet. “Their coordinated efforts and cross training will help ensure a successful transition for our staff and for the public safety community.”

Still, a fourth generation Wilmingtonian, has been with New Hanover County since May 2006, first in the Planning and Inspections Department and then with Emergency Management/911. Prior to joining New Hanover County, he worked in the emergency services field for 10 years and is graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), with a bachelor’s degree in geography and a Masters of Public Administration degree.

The Emergency Management/911 Department serves all of New Hanover County, including the City of Wilmington, the towns of Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, Wrightsville Beach, and the UNCW campus. The department’s key missions are to protect citizens and visitors from the effects of natural and technological disasters, to receive emergency calls, and provide dispatch and emergency communications functions for all emergency response agencies in New Hanover County.

In addition to the 911 software and system upgrades that Still will help oversee, he is also leading the emergency preparedness efforts for several major events in the county, including the Ironman Triathlon and the Wells Fargo PGA Tournament.
