NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County Public Library will celebrate the grand opening of its new Story Park with a ribbon cutting and a morning of kid’s activities on Tuesday, October 18. The ribbon cutting will take place at 9:30 a.m. and activities will follow in the Library’s Story Park, located next to the Main Library at the corner of Third and Chestnut Streets.
Story Park will extend the library experience outdoors, featuring hands-on learning for all ages with four demonstration gardens, giant musical instruments, a Story Walk, and a life-sized chess and checker board.
“We want guests to connect with the park, to learn from the gardens, and to interact with the outdoors,” said Library Director Harry Tuchmayer. “One unique feature will be signs throughout the park that have QR codes linking to a website with plant names and local gardening resources.”
At the grand opening celebration, Library and Cape Fear Museum staff will offer outdoor math and science activities, sidewalk chalk drawing, and other interactive learning experiences in Story Park until noon. A Master Gardener from the New Hanover County Arboretum will also be in the park to share resources and answer questions.
The community is invited to attend the ribbon cutting and celebration. Parking for Story Park is available in the deck next to the Main Library, with entrances on Second Street. Detailed information about the park can be found on the Library’s website.
During the grand opening, regularly scheduled storytimes will be offered in the Main Library’s Children’s Room on the second floor: Lapsit Storytime is at 9:30 a.m. for lap babies up to 18 months old; Toddler Time follows at 10 a.m. for children 18 months to 3 years old; and 3 to 5 year olds are welcome at Preschool Storytime at 10:30 a.m. Pre-literacy programs featuring stories, songs, and movement are offered every weekday at one or more New Hanover County Library location. These free programs are designed to model the kind of daily interaction young children need to develop speech and reading readiness. Visit the calendar at www.nhclibrary.org or call any NHC Library for the schedule.
