NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – According to New Hanover County Health Director Phillip Tarte, “New Hanover County public health officials are pleased with yesterday’s announcement by Chemours that the company will capture, remove, and safely dispose of wastewater containing the byproduct GenX. However, we remain dedicated to and support the state and federal investigations underway of our county’s drinking water and the Chemours Company.”

N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) began water sampling at 12 locations along the Cape Fear River on Monday, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched an investigation into Chemours this week.

New Hanover County public health officials will continue regular calls with state health officials to discuss the potential health effects of GenX and will keep the public informed of any new information.

The county’s website will continue to be updated as information comes available.
