NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – During recent construction activity at the existing historical County building located at 320 Chestnut Street, some intact human skeletal remains have been discovered.
All discoveries have been coordinated with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, UNCW and the North Carolina Office of State Archeology.
After analysis, the preliminary findings by state and local archeologists are that the site is not an ancient Indian burial ground and is possibly a small cemetery or family burial site.
New Hanover County is proceeding with great care and respect of the site and pursuant to instruction of the state archeologist who has statutory authority over the remains found.
