NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County government will mark the start of the 2015 hurricane season by hosting a countywide preparedness exercise today at the county’s emergency operations center.
Various emergency response agencies and community organizations will participate in a day long exercise on Wednesday at the County’s Emergency Operations Center in Wilmington. Officials will be tracking a simulated hurricane named Alice.
This exercise will challenge the county, municipalities, emergency response teams and local non-profit groups to test and evaluate their emergency plans.
“The objective of the exercise is to review and validate our plans and expectations of each other,” said Warren Lee, director of New Hanover County Emergency Management and 911. “This is a great training opportunity for our community partners as well as new players.”
The exercise will also include the activation of the County’s Joint Information Center (JIC). The JIC has become standard procedure for coordinating public information when multiple agencies are involved.
Hurricane season is June 1 through November 30. For more information on New Hanover County Emergency Management and 911 visit em911.nhcgov.com. Residents may sign up for emergency alerts at emergency.nhcgov.com.
