(New Hanover County)—The New Hanover County Department of Social Services will begin taking applications for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) on December 1, 2015.  This program provides a one-time annual payment to the utility to help eligible families pay their heating bills.

Households must be responsible for their own heating expenses and meet income and other eligibility criteria.  A recent heating bill and verification of all household income must be provided at the time of application.

Applications will be taken from December 1 through December 31 from households with an elderly person age 60 and above, or a disabled person receiving SSI, SSA or VA benefits and receiving services through the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services.  Applications will be taken from January 4 through March 31, 2016 from any household as long as funds are available.  For eligible households, approval for heating assistance will be based on availability of funds once all application information is received.

All payments are made directly to the heating provider.
