New Hanover County Employee Charged with Embezzlement

New Hanover County – On November 24, a New Hanover County Department of Social Services employee was arrested after it was suspected that she was allegedly embezzling funds.  The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office was immediately contacted, and the arrest was made shortly thereafter.

It is alleged that the employee created a fictitious company providing tutoring and mentoring services to students, and funneled funds from her office to that company.

The employee, Angelina Bernard, was charged with 11 counts of embezzlement and will be on investigatory leave based on the state personnel policies.
