New Hanover County, NC – At today’s New Hanover County Board of Commissioners meeting, the County’s Budget and Strategy and Finance Departments were recognized for their recent awards from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).
New Hanover County’s Budget and Strategy Department received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by GFOA for fiscal year beginning July 1, 2015. This award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting and it is the twenty-fifth consecutive year that the county’s budget department has received this honor.
The budget was reviewed by a panel of independent budget experts who use extensive criteria to evaluate the effectiveness of the budget as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communications device. Award-winning budgets must be rated “proficient” in all four categories.
In addition, New Hanover County’s Finance Department was presented with the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by GFOA for the fiscal year 2015 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. This is the thirty-fifth consecutive year that the county has achieved this prestigious award.
The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. The county’s financial report was thoroughly reviewed based on generally accepted principles as established by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), and judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program.
“These awards reflect the commitment of our Commissioners and county staff to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting and financial reporting,” said Chris Coudriet, New Hanover County Manager. “The county is dedicated to being the model of good governance by effectively managing the county and serving our citizens.”
