NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County government will mark the start of the 2016 hurricane season by hosting a countywide preparedness exercise Wednesday, June 1 at the county’s Emergency Operations Center in Wilmington.
The day-long exercise will challenge the county, municipalities, emergency response teams and local non-profit groups to test and evaluate their emergency plans. Officials will be tracking a simulated hurricane named Dave.
“The objective of the exercise is to review and validate our plans and expectations of each participating agency,” said Warren Lee, director of New Hanover County Emergency Management and 911. “This is a great collaborative training opportunity for New Hanover County and our community partners.”
The exercise will also include the activation of the county’s Joint Information Center (JIC). The JIC has become standard procedure for coordinating public information when multiple agencies are involved.
Hurricane season is June 1 through November 30. For more information on New Hanover County Emergency Management and 911 visit em911.nhcgov.com. Residents may sign up for emergency alerts at emergency.nhcgov.com.
