NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County Fire Rescue will be promoting fire and life safety throughout the upcoming summer months. Their topic this week is the benefit of fire sprinklers, as evidenced with the recent cooking-related fire on June 1, 2016 at Providence Park Apartments, which was extinguished by an automatic sprinkler system installed in the apartment.
New Hanover County Fire Rescue is available to meet with the media at the Providence Park Apartments or at the New Hanover County Government Center to speak about the benefits of fire sprinklers. Contact Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Frank Meyer at 910-798-7025 for more information.
“Fire sprinklers were critical to minimizing fire damage at the recent Providence Park Apartments fire and they allowed the occupants to escape safely and uninjured,” said Deputy Chief Meyer. “The benefits of fire sprinklers are often taken for granted, but their importance was recently shown and we want to remind the public of their value.”
According to the 2013 National Fire Protection Association’s report U.S. Experience with Sprinklers, fire sprinkler systems in residential settings have reduced fire fatalities by 82 percent.
In this recent fire, New Hanover County Fire Rescue was dispatched to the scene and found the fire damage was limited to the immediate area of the fire and had already been extinguished by the sprinklers. Firefighters quickly shut off the sprinkler system to prevent further water damage.
The public should be reminded that properly installed and maintained fire sprinkler systems help to minimize property damage and recovery costs. They save lives and save money. Situations like this also highlight the importance of having renter’s insurance to cover any personal contents that may be damaged.
