New Hanover County, NC – New Hanover County welcomes Phillip Tarte, MPH to the position of Health Director. Mr. Tarte served a nine-year term as Public Health Director for Union County, NC, the eighth most populous county in North Carolina, and he brings over 21 years of experience working with local and state health programs.
“Having interviewed extremely qualified candidates from our applicant pool, I am excited that the New Hanover County Board of Health made a unanimous decision to hire Mr. Tarte,” said Board Chair Dr. Kim Thrasher Horne. Originally from Columbus County, NC, Mr. Tarte received his Bachelor’s degree from UNC-Charlotte before obtaining a Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill.
While employed with Union County, Mr. Tarte was responsible for leading a staff of 120 health care professionals and managing a budget of nearly $11.6 million. His community involvement includes serving as an existing board member for both the NC Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Advisory Board and NC Institute of Medicine. He is the current chair of the Union County Transportation Advisory Board, and former chair and current board member of Hospice of Union County. He will use his expertise to assume the position that has been held by David Rice for over 18 years, who is retiring effective July 1.
Mr. Tarte is excited about the prospect of being able to continue his cutting-edge work in public health, while being closer to family in Columbus County. The county is equally excited about Mr. Tarte’s appointment by the Board of Health. When informed about the board’s decision, County Manager Chris Coudriet shared his support for the decision, stating: “We are fortunate to have the ability to hire an experienced health director who is respected by his peers within the state. In his role, Mr. Tarte will positively impact our citizens while demonstrating the county’s shared values of professionalism, integrity, innovation, stewardship, and accountability.”
Mr. Tarte will begin employment as Health Director on July 19.
