Property Tax Bills Arriving Soon

Posted August 24, 2016 at 1:33 pm     Category: News ReleaseTax

New Hanover County, NC – New Hanover County property owners will receive their tax bills in the mail in the coming days. Property taxes are due on September 1, but can be paid without interest until January 5, 2017.

To assist property owners and encourage penalty-free payments, all tax bills include four payment coupons that reflect the total amount owed, divided into four equal payments. The coupons indicate a monthly due date from September through December.

On January 6, 2017 taxes become delinquent and options for repayment are much less flexible. Once taxes become delinquent, interest is added at the rate of two percent for the first month and .75 percent per month thereafter.

New Hanover County increased the property tax rate by 2 cents in 2015 and by 4.9 cents in 2016, for a total of 6.9 cents. Both of these tax rate increases were established in order to make payments on the county’s voter-approved debts. This 6.9 cents increase over the past two years is part of the overall New Hanover County current tax rate of 62.3 cents per $100 value.

Property owners will notice that the voter-approved debts are separated on the tax bill and listed as “debt fund.” This is to demonstrate that those funds are only being used for their intended purpose, which is paying the debt service payments on voter-approved bonds. Additional information about the debt service tax rate and voter-approved bonds can be found here.

New Hanover County will continue to offer numerous payment options to assist taxpayers in meeting their tax obligation before incurring additional interest and fees. The New Hanover County Tax Office urges citizens to contact the office upon receipt of their tax bill if they need to make alternative payment arrangements.

If you have questions about your bill or would like to make payment arrangements please contact the office at (910) 798-7300 or visit the website at www.tax.nhcgov.com.
