New Hanover County, NC – New Hanover County Clerk to the Board Teresa Elmore will retire from her position on December 1, 2016 after 30 years of service to the county. Elmore began her career in the Planning Department, spent more than 20 years as the deputy clerk, and was appointed to the role of clerk to the board in 2014.
The Board of Commissioners has unanimously agreed to appoint Kym Crowell, the current deputy clerk, as Elmore’s successor. The board will approve this appointment at its meeting on Monday, October 17.
“We are grateful to Teresa for her outstanding 30 years of service to the citizens and officials in New Hanover County,” said Beth Dawson, chairman of the Board of County Commissioners. “Teresa’s leadership has been a great example for Kym as she steps into the new role, and we are delighted to promote Kym.”
Crowell is a 1993 graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. She received her North Carolina Certified County Clerk designation from the UNC School of Government’s Clerks’ Certification Institute in January 2016. Crowell joined New Hanover County in December 1994, and has served as deputy clerk since January 2008.
The Clerk to the Board is one of three positions directly appointed by the County Commissioners. The clerk is responsible for preparing the minutes of board meetings and maintaining the official and permanent record of board actions. The clerk also manages the office of the governing body by providing administrative support for five commissioners, responding to requests for information from the general public and administering the recruitment of citizens to county advisory boards and committees.
