NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – More than 70 students from New Hanover County’s elementary and middle schools participated in the annual county-wide Soil & Water Conservation District contests this past March. This year’s theme was “Soil and Water….Yours for Life” and six local students were first-place finishers on the county level:
All of these students moved on to the twelve-county area competition, where Ian Peplow from WAAS placed first in the Area 6 speech competition. Peplow will participate in the state-level speech competition in Raleigh on May 4.
“We are very proud of this year’s participants and the way they creatively communicated the importance of water quality, soil health and conservation,” said New Hanover Soil & Water Conservation Education Coordinator Elissa Riley.
New Hanover Soil and Water Conservation District will hold an awards and recognition ceremony for student winners on Wednesday, May 24 at 4 p.m. in the south atrium of the County’s Government Center building, located at 230 Government Center Drive. Winning contest entries and honorable mentions will be on display for viewing, and the public is invited to attend.
