NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – A meeting with Chemours regarding drinking water safety took place at the New Hanover County Government Center on Thursday, June 15. In the meeting, local and state officials asked detailed questions on the GenX that is being discharged into the Cape Fear River, and pressed Chemours for additional health and safety data and action.

“We have asked that Chemours bring this discharge to zero percent,” said New Hanover County Board of Commissioners Chairman Woody White. “They have not committed to do so as of yet.”

A state investigation by NC DEQ and NC DHHS is now underway, and water collection and testing will begin next week of the Cape Fear River. New Hanover County is relying on state and federal regulators to bring clarity to this situation and inform the public as soon as possible.

A full video of Thursday’s press conference can be viewed on the county’s YouTube page.
