A statement from New Hanover County Health Director Phillip Tarte regarding recently-released water sampling data is below:
While we eagerly await a health assessment based on the water sampling done by the state agencies, the raw data released yesterday by our regional partners appears to indicate a significant reduction in the level of GenX in the Cape Fear River from previous studies.
As New Hanover County’s Health Director, my obligation is to provide the public with scientifically-based health risk assessments. On a call with the state earlier today, New Hanover County encouraged our state partners to complete its assessment so that we can understand what the current levels of GenX mean to our residents and visitors. We have been told that this summary will be available by the end of this week and we expect them to meet that deadline so that the public can be informed.
The Health Department’s website will continue to be updated as information becomes available.
