NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC –  New Hanover County’s Airlie Gardens is looking for artists or teams of artists to decorate, paint, and adorn one of 15 oversized fiberglass garden gnomes for the gardens. The five-foot-tall fiberglass garden gnomes will be placed throughout the grounds for guests to enjoy as part of their garden experience this summer.

Artists must apply and designs will be selected based on creativity, craftsmanship, use of materials, the ability to appeal to all age groups, outdoor sustainability and durability. Applications are due by Wednesday, February 28 and can be found here.

“This new summer outdoor exhibit will be a collection that appeals to all of our visitors and brings local artists together to enhance the gardens,” said Guest Services Manager Rebecca Pearce. “Our summer exhibit is always an anticipated addition to the gardens and it attracts thousands of visitors each year.”

The theme for this year’s summer exhibit is inspired by the famous Chicago Cows, with a special twist of whimsy, using large-scale garden gnomes. This is the sixth consecutive year that Airlie Gardens has hosted a summer art exhibit, and the gnomes will be on display July through October. Learn more about the summer art exhibit here.
