Inadvertent Emergency Alert at Government Center

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – This morning at the New Hanover County Government Center, the county’s emergency alert system was inadvertently activated through the county’s phone system.

This was not a planned drill, so the county treated this as a real threat and law enforcement responded. The building was cleared by law enforcement, no threat was identified, and employees are safe. This has been deemed an accidental alert.

The Government Center reopened for business at 2 p.m.

At the time of the alert, employees in the building heard a message stating “This is an exercise, this is an exercise, this is an exercise, there is an active shooter in the building.” That message was created for an active shooter drill that the county conducted in October, and it had not been updated since. The alert message has now been updated.

“I appreciate the work of our local law enforcement who responded quickly and thoroughly, and I am grateful to our employees and our customers for their patience through this process,” said County Manager Chris Coudriet. “We will learn from this incident, and ensure our processes continue to improve to keep our employees and citizens safe. That is our priority.”
