NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County will begin taking applications on Monday, December 3 for the state’s Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) for qualified households. The program provides a one-time annual utility payment to help eligible families pay their heating expenses during the cold-weather months.
Households that have a person age 60 or older, or an individual receiving disability benefits and services through the N.C. Division of Aging and Adult Services are eligible to apply for assistance beginning December 3. All other households may apply from January 2 through March 29, 2019, or until funds are exhausted.
“Last year, our social workers helped 2,840 New Hanover County households with their utility bills,” said New Hanover County’s Social Services Director Michelle Winstead. “This assistance is so important, because we know there are residents who need it to stay safe and warm. I encourage anyone who is having difficulty paying their bill to come in and apply.”
New Hanover County Department of Social Services (DSS) administers the program locally, and applications must be done in person at DSS, located at 1650 Greenfield Street. Those eligible to apply in December can also apply at the locations and times listed below:
