NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – Eaton Elementary School, located at 6701 Gordon Rd. in Wilmington, will open at 6:30 p.m. today for residents who are seeking shelter. Eaton is not a pet co-location shelter.
Codington Elementary at 4321 Carolina Beach Rd. and Blair Elementary at 6510 Market St. (also known as Wrightsville Beach at Blair Elementary) are still open for the public, but residents are encouraged to go to Eaton Elementary if they are seeking shelter this evening. Anyone with cats or dogs can still go to Blair, the pet co-location shelter.
Residents and visitors prone to storm surge and flooding should evacuate and be in a safe location before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4.
Those seeking emergency shelter should bring their own blankets/pillows, prescription medications and other necessary items. No alcohol, illegal drugs, or weapons are permitted. There will be limited food service available for people seeking shelter.
Residents of Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach, are under a mandatory evacuation order. Residents of Wilmington, and all of New Hanover County who live in low-lying areas where flooding and storm surge are a factor, are under a voluntary evacuation. Residents can look up their address on the storm surge forecast map to know if they are in one of these surge-prone areas here.
New Hanover County Emergency Management continues to operate the Emergency Operations Center and Joint Information Center. Anyone with questions, including transportation needs to the shelter, can call the public information number at (910) 798-6800.
