NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – A State of Emergency has been declared for New Hanover County effective today, September 3 at 5 p.m. in advance of Hurricane Dorian.

“Hurricane Dorian is a major hurricane and is expected to impact New Hanover County later this week,” said Emergency Management Director Steven Still. “A state of emergency declaration provides the county with additional powers and expedites the mobilization of emergency management resources that may be necessary to rescue, evacuate, shelter and provide essential commodities to our community.”

The State of Emergency states that: “The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners herby orders all county-wide law enforcement officers, employees and emergency management personnel to cooperate in the law enforcement and implementation of the provision of the county/municipal emergency ordinances.”

New Hanover County Emergency Management Officials are closely monitoring this storm with local, state and federal partners. The county’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is activated and will be operational 24 hours a day throughout the storm to help ensure our community is safe.

MEDIA BRIEFING WEDNESDAY

A media briefing will be held Wednesday, September 4 at noon, to provide information about the latest forecast for Hurricane Dorian, as well as storm preparations and protective action decisions for our community. The county plans to hold media briefings at noon on Thursday and Friday as well, to provide the most up-to-date information for the community.

The briefings will be held at the New Hanover County Government Center, 230 Government Center Drive, outside the Lucie Harrell Conference Room.
