NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – The 24th annual Art in the Arboretum will be held Friday, Nov. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the New Hanover County Arboretum at 6206 Oleander Drive in Wilmington. Sponsored by Friends of the Arboretum and the Wilmington Art Association, Art in the Arboretum will feature more than 140 artists, live music, food trucks, dance vignettes by US International Ballet, plein air painters, eighth grade and high school art displays, children’s art activities and art by Ability Garden participants.
“’Art show’ brings to mind paintings and sculptures displayed against the gray or white walls of a gallery, but at Art in the Arboretum, attendees will view the artists’ creations surrounded by the beauty and color of the New Hanover County Arboretum’s gardens,” said New Hanover County Arboretum and Cooperative Extension Director Lloyd Singleton. “Visitors can stroll by the pond, walk the labyrinth in the Contemplation Garden, relax in the Japanese garden and enjoy and appreciate the talent of our artist community.”
Artists will exhibit handcrafted jewelry, glass, textiles, metalwork, paintings, photography and a variety of other mediums. This year’s event adds an educational exhibit, “What Goes Around Comes Around,” by Bonnie Monteleone, Executive Director of the Plastic Ocean Project. Using plastics collected during Monteleone’s research, a 25-foot wall of ocean waves was constructed to communicate the direct impact the disposal of plastic products has on life and environment.
Art will be available for purchase throughout the weekend, and a raffle for restaurant gift cards, gift baskets and spa packages will be held to support the Arboretum grounds and programs. The drawings will be Sunday, Nov. 3, and participants do not have to be present to win.
Tickets for Art in the Arboretum are $5. Admission is free for children under 12, military with ID and members of Friends of the Arboretum. Tickets to the Friends of the Arboretum Annual Member’s Party Saturday, Nov. 2, from 6 to 10 p.m. are sold separately and can be found at TheFriends.wildapricot.org.
