New Hanover County, N.C. – Jameson McDermott, Museum Educator, will be presented with the 2019 North Carolina Science Teachers Association (NCSTA) Distinguished Service in Science Education Award Non-School Setting at the annual NCSTA Conference on Thursday, November 14, 2019. The ceremony will take place Thursday at 6:15 p.m. at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem, NC.

The NCSTA Distinguished Service in Science Education in North Carolina award is given to a person exhibiting leadership in science education; contributing to improvements in science education; and excelling in the aspects of science education in a non-school setting. This honor is determined by other educators throughout North Carolina and serves as recognition of Mr. McDermott’s professional excellence and contributions to science education in the state.

“Jameson McDermott is a superior educator and has a knack for drawing students into his programming and encouraging participation from even the most reluctant of too-cool teens. He has written almost every new school program at the Museum in the last decade and continues to offer his creative talents in advising colleagues, developing educational activities and even constructing exhibits. His talents range far beyond his informal educator role and far beyond the walls of the Museum,” stated Sheryl Kingery Mays, Museum Director.

Cape Fear Museum of History and Science, a Smithsonian Affiliate, is located at 814 Market Street and is open Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. Standard admission prices are $8 for adults; $7 for seniors, students and military with valid ID; $5 for children 6-17; and free for children 5 and under and for museum members. New Hanover County residents’ free day is the first Sunday of each month. More information at 910-798-4370 or www.capefearmuseum.com.
