NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – At its meeting on Monday, May 18, the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved and accepted the Partnership Advisory Group’s (PAG) recommendation to focus on three potential partners for New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC): Atrium Health, Duke Health and Novant Health.

At the meeting, Commissioners heard a presentation by PAG Co-Chairs Barb Biehner and Spence Broadhurst and Vice Co-Chair Dr. Joseph Pino, MD, and reviewed the recommendation from the advisory group.

The PAG voted unanimously on May 7 to focus further due diligence and site visits with Atrium, Duke and Novant, and brought that recommendation before the NHRMC Board of Trustees on May 11 and New Hanover County Board of Commissioners on May 18. Both boards have now endorsed the PAG’s recommendation.

None of the six responding organizations will be eliminated prior to further evaluation and public input, and the proposals will continue to be evaluated against the options to remain the same or restructure.

“This is something we have been discussing publicly since last July, and nearly a year later we are moving forward in a targeted way to conduct due diligence with three organizations that all have something important to offer our community – and that is stability in healthcare,” said New Hanover County Board of Commissioners Chair Julia Olson-Boseman. “That is what all of this has been about – finding a partner that can help our community and ensure that our healthcare system can remain strong, even through difficult situations like hurricanes and pandemics. We need NHRMC to grow strategically, to offer more healthcare services to our region, to be a strong, key employer for our residents, and to remain on stable footing.”

Commissioners requested to receive an update at their June 15 board meeting on the progress of due diligence and letters of intent with the three organizations. In addition, Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Monday, June 22 for the public to comment on all six proposals. Details are being confirmed and will be announced to the public in the coming weeks.
