NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County has declared a State of Emergency effective today, August 3, at noon in advance of Tropical Storm Isaias.

“A state of emergency declaration provides the county with additional powers and expedites the mobilization of emergency management resources in case they are needed for our community,” said Emergency Management Director Steven Still. “We are expecting tropical storm conditions this evening for our area, and we always want to be prepared – so that is what this State of Emergency helps us to do. And we encourage our residents to be prepared as well. Be in a safe place by 8 p.m. tonight, have your emergency kit ready in case the power goes out or you need to leave your home unexpectedly, and continue to stay informed.”

New Hanover County Emergency Management Officials are closely monitoring this storm with local, state and federal partners. And several local municipalities are issuing or have issued their own states of emergency, in addition to the county’s.

New Hanover County’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is activated and will be operational 24 hours a day throughout the storm to help ensure our community is safe.

As a reminder, county offices, facilities, parks, and the landfill closed today at noon and will be closed on Tuesday, August 4. Courts in New Hanover and Pender counties will also be closed on Tuesday, and will reopen on regular schedule Wednesday.

The public can call 910-798-6800 with questions, sign up for emergency news and alerts at EmergencyNHC.com, and stay informed through the county’s trusted social media pages: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Nextdoor.
