NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – The New Hanover County Office of Diversity and Equity held its first annual Equity Awards Gala on August 20 and honored ten community members with awards for their efforts in expanding and elevating equity and diversity.
At the gala, New Hanover County Board of Commissioners Vice-Chair Deb Hays opened the event, saying: “I am truly delighted at the dedication you have shown to highlight and advocate for all our residents, and the exceptional model you have set for others. I’m so very proud of the work of New Hanover County’s Office of Diversity and Equity. In its first year, this office has stepped up to support our residents in remarkable ways. I look forward to this important work continuing and I applaud this team, and all of you, for lifting up every voice in our community.”
The recipients of the 2021 Equity Awards are:
“The New Hanover County Equity Awards was created to celebrate the work of equity throughout the county, and this first year was a great success,” said New Hanover County’s Chief Diversity and Equity Officer Linda Thompson. “We received more than 48 nominations that showcased the incredible work our residents, businesses, and nonprofits are doing to promote diversity, inclusion, and respect county-wide. I want to congratulate our ten recipients and thank them for their commitment to help us heal forward together as a community.”

The New Hanover County Office of Diversity and Equity was established in June 2020 with a mission to promote an inclusive and fair work environment and build a culture and community where employees and residents are respected, valued and understood for their own identity.
