NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – Seven volunteers, a longtime donor and New Hanover County’s 4-H agent were recognized by the state for their contributions to the organization at the recent North Carolina 4-H Volunteer Leaders Association Conference.

Volunteers Jill Wilson and Tina Sharpe each received the North Carolina 4-H Volunteer Leaders Association Conference of Southern States Scholarship, while Melisa Hight was awarded the State 4-H School Enrichment Volunteer Recognition honor. The county’s 4-H Horse Club, with leadership from Emily Brazik, Beth Garrett, Erin Sakowski, Jess Trichel and Jill Wilson, was honored with the State 4-H Volunteer Leadership Team recognition.

New Hanover County Farm Bureau was presented with the 4-H Donor Recognition for its financial contributions to support the organization. New Hanover County 4-H Extension Agent J. Scott Enroughty was selected for the Extension Staff Volunteer Support Recognition.

“So many 4-H volunteers gain a sense of appreciation when they know their efforts are valued by 4-H members, parents, other volunteers, as well as by Extension professionals at the county, district and state levels,” Enroughty said. “I’m so humbled to be recognized, but honored to be surrounded by so many amazing people who have also been recognized for their commitment to serving our young people her in New Hanover County.”

In North Carolina, 16,978 adult volunteers supported 229,500 youth in 4-H programs throughout the state in 2021.

The North Carolina 4-H program has several categories of state awards for which volunteers, 4-H clubs, donors or Extension professionals may nominate worthy individuals or clubs. Nominee applications are reviewed by a selection committee, and those selected for the awards are recognized at the North Carolina 4-H Volunteer Recognition Luncheon.
