NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County Emergency Management officials are closely monitoring Hurricane Ian and any potential impacts for our area. At this time, based on information from the National Weather Service, New Hanover County is expected to have some tropical storm force winds Friday night into Saturday from Ian as well as a high-pressure system approaching the area that will also make it gusty on Thursday.

“Our area may see six to eight inches of rain over the weekend, so we are actively communicating with the National Weather Service and other emergency response partners as we watch for potential flash flooding and possible river flooding,” said Emergency Management Director Steven Still. “We encourage residents to check around their home and make sure their gutters are clear and any drainage ditches and culverts are free of debris, to help ensure the rain can flow unimpeded. And everyone needs to remain alert and ready for the potential of tornadoes Friday into Saturday morning. Review your tornado safety plan and have a location in your home that you can get to quickly.”

At this time, New Hanover County plans to continue normal business operations and there are no planned closures of county offices or attractions. And based on predicted impacts, the county does not plan to fully activate the Emergency Operations Center or open any shelters; but Emergency Management staff will continue to monitor the storm and will be active in any response that is needed for the community.
